SV RICOCHET
SV RICOCHET
1956 Kettenburg PCC Sloop - restored to "As New"
SV RICOCHET is a 46′ Kettenburg PCC first launched in 1956 in San Diego.
Price: offers to $80,000 CAD
Ricochet is a Kettenburg Pacific Cruising Class short-keel Bermuda-rigged fractional sloop first launched in 1956. She is hull number 21 of 24 PCC’s built by Kettenburg Boat Works of San Diego, to George Kettenburg Jr’s 1946 design. Her present condition is arguably better than when she was first launched.
The PCC is a one-design racing/cruising yacht, regarded as one of the most significant offshore racers in the heritage of North American yacht design. Kettenburgs were competitive, some say dominant, in west-coast ocean racing following WWII through the mid 1960s. The design also features full creature comforts for cruising. Standing headroom in the main saloon is 6′-1″. While the PCC’s proved to be nearly unbeatable on the race-course, they are also easy for a family to handle for recreation.
Ricochet is carvel planked, Honduran Mahogany on Oak frames, with a Teak cockpit and Teak cabin sole, Sapele deck furniture, a Douglas Fir centerline and Sitka Spruce mast & spars.
Ricochet won the coveted Spruce Cup at the 2011 Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival, only to be written off by her insurer following a shallow-water sinking a few months later. However, (armed with a modest insurance payout) she bounced back, enjoying a very thorough keel-up rebuild and detailed restoration. Relaunched in January 2023, Ricochet went on to win Best Restored Sailboat at the 44th Annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival.
The restoration work included the replacement of 52 pairs of steam-bent White Oak frames and floors, complete refastening of the original Honduran Mahogany hull planking with silicon bronze screws, all new deck furniture including hatches, covering boards, toe rails, etc, new standing and running rigging, a new Beta Marine 25 HP diesel engine, all new mechanical, electrical, propane and communication equipment, a substantially new interior, including all new upholstery. Such gear as wasn’t replaced was restored to original specifications. Sale includes full weatherproof custom winter covers by Mastercraft – new in 2024.
Throughout the restoration process she has stayed true to her original design so far as possible.
2023 survey available, describing Ricochet being in “as new” condition.
Ricochet is sold with the option of ongoing moorage at the Vancouver Maritime Museum Heritage Harbour Marina at the entrance to False Creek in Vancouver.
Ricochet was the subject of an Off Center Harbor video profile in January 2024.
