MV OLMAHA 1926

CA$125,000.00

MV OLMAHA for Sale

Olmaha, a well built and maintained 60-foot caravel planked classic bridge deck motor cruiser, is available for new ownership. Having spent 22 wonderful years caring for her and cruising the Salish Sea and Broughton Archipelago we have decided it is time to seek new caretakers.

Olmaha is offered fully found including a 10.5 ft Iain Oughtred designed sailing dinghy, as well as a full winter cover. She can be seen by appointment at Van Isle Marina in Sidney BC.

Brief History of Olmaha:

Custom built in 1926 for the Neikirk family of Tacoma at the J Martinac Shipyard the name Olmaha was inspired by first names of the family: OLin, MAude and their daughter HAzel. Launched in June 1926 and christened by Hazel, the August 1926 edition of Pacific Motor Boat reported that Olmaha “was placed in the water ready to cruise and within a few days left on a ten-day’s sail to British Columbia waters. Ten Tacoma men made up the party”. After Olin’s death in 1932, Olmaha changed ownership and was renamed: Shoreleave (1932); Continental II (1944); Kodiac Bear (1949); Litho (1951). From 1956 to 1990, she was presumed lost until being rediscovered on Lake Union undergoing restoration. Sold in 1992 to a Canadian owner she was moved to Vancouver Island, registered as a Canadian vessel under her original name, and underwent extensive re-planking as well as replacement of the transom, teak aft deck, and aft deck enclosure.

In 2004 the current owners assumed responsibility for Olmaha and conducted further restoration including updates of all electrical systems, replacement of the mast and boom and installation of a Hurricane hydronic heating system. In 2006 annual visits commenced at Chris Earl’s Gronlund Boatworks for further substantial structural and mechanical restoration. These included replacing the stem, guardrails, horn timber, rudder stuffing box, reduction gear and shafts as well as extensive frame repairs, planking, refastening and re-caulking. In 2013 Olmaha received the Victoria Classic Boat Festival award for “Best Restored Power”. In 2015 Abernethy and Gaudin refurnished the pilot house with cabinetry including a teak settee and table that converts to a double birth. Recent routine maintenance during haul outs at Westport Marina has been performed by Abernethy and Gaudin.
