Vessel Overview
Class Act is a 42′ express cruiser designed by A.M. Deering and built in 1946 by Herbert Ellis of Chicago, Illinois. Constructed just after WWII, she incorporates quality surplus parts from the PT-boat program, giving her a unique place in American yachting history.

Her maiden voyage was in Seattle, and she has remained in Pacific Northwest waters ever since. Kept in fresh water under covered moorage, she has benefited from consistent stewardship and major upgrades by her past owners.

Construction & Systems

  • Hull: Carvel-planked Honduras mahogany (1-1/8″), refastened with bronze screws (2014)

  • Frames & Keel: Steam-bent white oak frames on 9″ centers; white oak keel

  • Transom: Honduras mahogany, rebuilt with double-planking

  • Deck & Cabin: T&G deck with plywood/fiberglass overlay; canvas on coach roof and aft trunk; varnished mahogany cabin sides with large pilothouse windows

  • Engines: Twin Perkins 4-236 diesels, ~85 hp each, with Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmissions (2.10:1 port / 1.91:1 starboard)

  • Cooling: Keel coolers (bronze tube Walter 2-pass system)

  • Fuel Economy: Cruises comfortably at 8 knots / 1800 RPM, burning ~4 gph

  • Electrical: Fully updated in 2024, with new batteries, monitoring & charging systems, and isolation transformer

Recent Refit Highlights

  • Complete hull refastening (2014)

  • Transom rebuilt

  • Deck and house coverings replaced

  • New electrical system (2024)

  • New batteries, monitoring/charging system, and isolation transformer (2024)

Performance & Comfort
Class Act is admired for her sea-kindly motion, reliable systems, and dry bilges both at dock and underway. She is equally suited to weekend getaways or extended summer cruising.

Cruising Grounds
From her freshwater slip at Lockhaven Marina on the Lake Washington Ship Canal, owners can quickly access Puget Sound through the Ballard Locks. The San Juan Islands, Whidbey Island, Hood Canal, and British Columbia’s Gulf Islands are all within easy reach — some of the most celebrated cruising waters in North America.

A rare opportunity to own a classic wooden express cruiser with rich history, quality construction, and turnkey upgrades. Class Act offers both vintage charm and practical cruising comfort in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.
